Day 3 - 42,32,22

After skirting the Mt Hutt snowfields and spending a bit of time in the 22 front ring yesterday, back to more familiar South Australian conditions today…..except for the wet roads, overcast sky and shortage of degrees Celsius. The inland route 72 has taken us back into the heart of the Canterbury Plains, onto straight roads and into the 42 chain ring…..could do with a few more teeth! Cow paddocks, centre pivot sprinklers, and a few things I’d never seen growing before. Corn I think.

Old mate Steve that we met at camp this morning proved helpful. Boiled us some water, explained why the methylated spirits for the stove is purple instead of clear and if necessary could help us get an illegal gun in Australia. (His brother had served time in Aussie for armed robbery and was thought dead for 40 years - good bloke to know when the “troubles” come.)

Supplementing the great kiwi pastimes of lawn mowing and fire wood collection, seems to be the need to trim hedges. Must have seen a million miles of hedge rows between paddocks and on the road side in the last 3 days. We haven’t seen it done in the flesh yet, but can’t wait to see them up the ladder.

We are now set up in the “Top 10” caravan park in Geraldine. There is the promise of 200 boutique beers on tap in a joint on the Main Street. Hydration set for tomorrow!
